Thank you for taking the time to view this video, designed to help you understand the graduation requirements at Sora Schools. By the time you're ready to graduate from Sora, your graduation page in Sora Home should reflect 100% completion of all graduation requirements.

Let's examine each requirement. At a high level:

  • English Language Arts (ELA): 4 credits

  • Mathematics: 4 credits

  • Science: 4 credits

  • Social Studies: 3 credits

  • World Language: 2 credits (of the same language)

  • Electives: 4 credits

For the classes of 2024 and 2025, there's an exemption from Health and PE. However, starting in 2026, all graduates must earn half a credit in both Health and PE.

Delving Deeper

ELA: It's based on two sets of credits with 10 units each. That's 10 units for Foundations Level Expeditions and 10 units for Extension Level Expeditions. In a typical high school program, 5 units equal one year (or one credit), and 20 units equal four years (or credits). Using our example, a student who has earned 20 units, split between extensions and foundations, has met all ELA requirements.

Science: You need 4 credits. Three of these credits must come from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The fourth can be from any other science interest. While there are options listed in Sora Home, students aren't limited to these. Any additional credits beyond the required four can count as electives.

World Language: The requirement is straightforward - 12 units of the same language. Six units equate to one credit, or what is typically one year's worth of study. Any additional credits can be used toward the elective requirement.

Math: You need six units each in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and another six units in either Precalculus, Calculus, or Statistics. In Sora Home, math is divided into two sections. There's an option after Algebra II to either move into a foundations course for Calculus or Statistics. These aren't electives; students must choose one.

Social Studies: The requirement is three credits: six units each in US History, World History A, and World History B. Additional credits, like Philosophy, can count as elective credits.

Electives: Four credits are required. These can be sourced from accredited institutions, previous coursework, or even independent study. For instance, if you partake in a choir at another school, submit that transcript to be recognized as an elective. Similarly, a course like "Intro to Psychology" at a university would count as an elective.

Furthermore, 16 demonstrations of eight abilities are required. This aspect is as crucial as GPA calculations and shouldn't be taken lightly. Make sure you're accumulating the necessary abilities for each expedition.

In summary, aim for 128 units and demonstrate 128 abilities to graduate. With six units being equivalent to one credit, and one credit equating to a year-long class, it's vital to plan early. Keep an eye on your progress and adjust your efforts accordingly.

Lastly, be cautious about the concept of electives. They're additional to the standard graduation requirements and shouldn't be confused with optional units in core subjects.

Thank you for listening. Reach out to your house advisor if you have questions, and always keep learning.

Electives and Off-Program Topics

Learn more about these program labels, as well as other program labels, in our Progress page guide: High School Units & Program Labels

Electives

Sora students are required to complete at least 4 Elective credits for graduation, in addition to a number of subject-specific electives (e.g. one Elective Math credit).

Students will work with House Advisors to customize their Sora Program to include their selected Electives.

Off- Program Topics

Topics that are not selected as Electives will appear with a red "off-program" icon on the Graduation tab.

Students may complete experiences with these "off program" units, but mastery will not count toward graduation credit.

If a student wishes to change their elective/off-program selections should reach out to their House Advisor to discuss options and graduation progress implications.
